Men’s basketball lands NJCAA Player of the Year Terry Copeland

The Pirates added Orange native and former Howard College center Terry Copeland to their roster for the 2026-27 season via the transfer portal.

The Seton Hall men’s basketball team added another major player to its 2026-27 roster this week, landing former Howard College (Texas) center Terry Copeland.

The 6-foot-10, 225-pound big man arrives in South Orange after a dominant season at the junior college (JUCO) level, where he earned NJCAA Division I National Player of the Year honors while helping Howard College win the NJCAA Division I national championship. In the title game against Southern Idaho, Copeland delivered one of his best performances of the season, scoring 23 points and pulling in 16 rebounds to lead the Hawks to the national title.

Copeland averaged 19.8 points and 7.9 rebounds per game during the 2025-26 season while shooting 67% from the field. He also averaged 3.2 offensive rebounds per game, leading Howard to a strong 33-4 record.

As an Orange, New Jersey native, Copeland's commitment to SHU brings him back home. The former Bergen Catholic star was recruited by SHU during his high school career, before spending his senior season at Legacy Early College in South Carolina. He began his collegiate career at Northern Illinois, but seeing limited action with the Huskies, transferred to Howard College for the 2025-26 season.

Copeland fills a major offseason need for the Pirates, adding his strength and inside scoring to a frontcourt that already brought in transfers Devin Williams and Abdulai Fanta Kabba. After dominating JUCO, Copeland heads to South Orange looking to make an impact at the Division I level.
