After Seton Hall’s loss to No. 9 TCU in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, head coach Kevin Willard heads to the Big 10 as Maryland’s new head coach. Willard served as Seton Hall’s head coach for 12 years in which he earned two Big East Championships in 2016 and 2020, five NCAA tournament berths, and seven 20-win seasons. The Pirates were expected to have a sixth berth in 2020 as a 3rd seed, though the tournament was cancelled due to COVID-19.

After 3 years, the Pirates will participate in the 2022 Women’s National Invitational Tournament after accepting an at-large bid. They will host Fairleigh Dickinson in the first round on Thursday, March 17th at 7:00 pm in Walsh Gymnasium. They declined an invitation last season due to concerns of COVID-19, and the season prior was cancelled.

Seton Hall continued their journey to make their first Big East Tournament Championship since falling to DePaul in 2015. Despite a valiant effort, most notably 24 points from Lauren Park-Lane, the Pirates could not overtake Big East Player of the Year Maddy Siegrist and the Villanova Wildcats and were eliminated with a 64-55 loss on Sunday.

Big East Tournament play continued on Saturday as the Pirates faced Creighton for the last game of the night. In exciting fashion, Seton Hall stole the game and upset the Bluejays with a last-second midrange jumper from Mya Bembry to advance to the semifinals, 66-65.

Round one of the Big East Tournament began on Friday, and Seton Hall was tasked with taking down No. 11 Butler. Continuing on their dominant run, the Pirates stole the show in the second half and came out victorious in Uncasville, Connecticut by a score of 58-39.

It was Senior Day in South Orange as the Pirates hosted the Creighton Bluejays in hopes of extending their win streak. Andra Espinoza-Hunter, Danielle Robinson, and Katie Armstrong were all honored before gametime on Sunday. Both sides battled to the final buzzer in double overtime, though Seton Hall ultimately fell to Creighton in heartbreaking fashion, 97-91.

Seton Hall returned to Newark on Saturday night after losing two games on the road. DePaul traveled to town with hopes of stealing another win from Seton Hall after defeating them in mid-January. The Pirates, despite struggles down the stretch, avenged their loss and came out victorious against the Blue Demons behind a monster 18-point, 18-rebound double-double from senior Jared Rhoden.

Looking to extend their win streak, Seton Hall started slow in what looked like the end to their recent surge.
