Inside Higher Ed’s “Academic Bracket” states that if the 2016 NCAA March Madness bracket was based on academic performance, Seton Hall’s men’s basketball team would make it to the Final Four.
The bracket is formulated using the Academic Progress Rate (APR) and Graduation Success Rate (GSR) for every team in the tournament. The bracket showed Seton Hall defeating the teams from Gonzaga University, the University of Utah, Michigan State University and Purdue University. SHU got knocked out of the academic tournament by Indiana University.
According to Matthew Geibel, director of Academic Support Services, who is responsible for the academic services for the entire Seton Hall varsity athletics program, the Seton Hall men’s basketball team does “well above” the required NCAA GPA of 2.0 for the players to be eligible to play. The team’s average GPA in fall 2015 was 3.14.
Geibel described the GSR as the percentage of basketball players that graduate at Seton Hall and the APR as a measure of how well the University is retaining the players and how the players maintain their eligibility.
Academic support services are offered to all student athletes on campus, according to Geibel.
“We organize objective based structure study halls,” Geibel said. “We provide a lot of tutoring and have individual meetings with all of our student athletes several times a week.”
