Snow Guide: How to avoid curveballs of snowfall

Here are tips and tricks to stay warm during the tumultuous weather conditions.

With snow expected this weekend, students at Seton Hall are being urged to prepare for cold, windy conditions and potentially hazardous travel.

Winter storms can disrupt daily routines on campus, but taking a few precautions can help students stay warm, safe and informed.

How to Stay Warm

Dressing appropriately is key when temperatures drop and snowfall begins.

Students should wear a heavy winter coat, layer clothing underneath and accessorize with gloves, scarves and hats to retain body heat. Weather-resistant footwear can also help keep feet dry and prevent slipping on icy walkways.

For students living on campus, it is important to ensure dorm room thermostats are working properly before the cold intensifies. Addressing heating issues early can help avoid discomfort during prolonged periods of freezing temperatures.

Students are encouraged to contact their Resident Assistants (RAs) with any concerns. Residence Life can also be reached at residencelife@shu.edu or 973-761-9172.

How to Stay Safe

Snow and ice can quickly create dangerous conditions for pedestrians and drivers.

Students are advised to remain cautious when walking or driving, even if walkways and roads appear salted.

Drivers should also take time to remove all snow from their vehicles before traveling.

In New Jersey, operating a vehicle with snow left on it can result in fines ranging from $25 to $75 per offense. If loose snow causes property damage, fines can reach up to $1,000.

Parking Updates

As weather conditions remain uncertain, SHU’s Parking Services has provided guidance for students planning to leave vehicles on campus.

“If you are planning to leave your vehicle on campus over the weekend, we strongly recommend that you relocate your vehicle to the Parking Deck and park on Levels 2–4 prior to leaving campus,” Parking Services wrote in an email sent to students on Jan. 22.

The fifth level of the parking deck will be closed due to expected weather conditions, according to the email students received.

University officials say student safety remains a top priority as forecasts evolve.

“As weather conditions evolve, Seton Hall University prioritizes the care, comfort, and safety of students across all campuses and encourages them to rely on official University resources for timely, accurate information,” University Relations told The Setonian.

Students are encouraged to monitor Pirate Alert, University Weather & Emergency Updates, and Department of Public Safety: Severe Winter Weather Resources for information on class cancellations and safety advisories.
