Camp, Sobel dominate as Pirates sweep Saint Peter’s

The Seton Hall softball team swept a doubleheader today against Saint Peters in convincing fashion, winning the first game 7-2 and the second game 8-0 in five innings. Today’s dominating wins against the Peacocks come on the heels of a narrow loss to DePaul in a rain-shortened series over the weekend and serve as important tune-ups heading into the rest of Big East play.

The tone for the day was set early as Pirates’ starter Reganne Camp made quick work of Saint Peters in the top of the first, and Hailey Arteaga continued her fantastic season by hitting a two-run home run to dead center field. Baylee Allender added a sac-fly that scored Darby Pandolfo, who had reached base on a double, to make it 3-0 Pirates after one.

The California duo of Arteaga and Destini Peck added insurance runs in the second, with Arteaga adding a sac-fly and Peck contributing an RBI double to make it 5-0 Pirates. The Pirates tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the second to make it 7-0. The seven-run cushion was more than enough for Camp and reliever Kelsey Gumm, who combined to allow two runs on a measly four hits while striking out nine Saint Peters batters.

The Pirates continued their torrid pitching and hitting in game two. Janae Barracato led things off with a double and scored two batters later on a Peck double. Katherine Matthys doubled twice and had three RBI’s. Jaden Tate belted a three-run triple in the third that made it 6-0 Pirates and effectively ended matters. Mo Sobel was dominant on the mound, tossing a five-inning, complete game shutout, striking out five in the process.

“We knew we were going to come out strong.,” head coach Paige Smith said.

“We got a great performance out of Mo [Sobel]. She was throwing gas all day and Reganne [Camp] kept them off balance. It was nice to see them bounce back.”

Smith added that this year’s Pirates have a “pass the bat” mentality and that she has enjoyed the fact that there has been a “revolving door” at multiple positions, accentuating the Pirates’ depth.

Seton Hall will be looking to stay hot against Butler on Saturday, April 6, as the Pirates begin a three-game set with the Bulldogs at Mike Sheppard Sr. Field.
