Resch caps historic season with selection in 2026 MLS SuperDraft

From Argentina to New Jersey, and now to Houston, Resch’s soccer journey continues in the MLS.

It’s been a season full of honors and awards for Seton Hall men’s soccer senior defender Augustin Resch.

Resch was named the Preseason BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year and was a unanimous selection to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team in August; proved the Preseason Coaches’ Poll right by earning both of those conference honors in November; and was selected to the United Soccer Coaches All-East Region First Team, All-America First Team and Scholar All-East Region Team earlier this month.

But all of that culminated in the biggest achievement of his career: being drafted in the 2026 MLS SuperDraft.

SHU Athletics announced on Thursday that the Argentina native was selected 69th overall in the third round of the draft by Houston Dynamo FC. One of ten BIG EAST players selected in this year’s draft, Resch is just the sixth Pirate in program history to be drafted, and the first since Sacha Kljestan was selected fifth overall nearly two decades ago.

Ahead of the draft, Resch became the first player in program history to be invited to the 2025 MLS College Showcase, which is a scouting event held earlier this week that allows for coaches, managers and scouts of MLS clubs to view some of the top collegiate prospects in the nation.

Having joined the Pirates in 2023, the selection serves as the crowning achievement of an impressive collegiate career for Resch. That same year, he was playing for the academy of a professional soccer club in his home country of Argentina. After being released from the team, he connected with a scout through an agency who put him in contact with the university—and the rest is history.

Since then, each season has been a steady improvement for Resch. In his first year as a Pirate, he appeared in 14 matches, while starting half of them and scoring just one goal. He made a big jump in year two, during which he started every game that season, including all eight of the Pirates’ clean sheets—the program’s most since 2004—and earned All-BIG EAST Second-Team honors.

Resch, however, made an even bigger jump from then to this past season, which was one of the most decorated seasons by a SHU player ever. In his first season as team captain, Resch became the first Pirate to be named an All-American, Scholar All-American, All-BIG EAST and one of the four individual BIG EAST soccer awards in program history. He was also named as one of fifteen semifinalists for the MAC Hermann Trophy, which is awarded to the top men’s and women’s college soccer players.

In addition to the conference and national honors he received this season, Resch anchored a SHU defense that allowed just 0.832 goals per game and boasted a goal differential of +14—good for 24th and 39th in the nation, respectively.

While facing the single-hardest strength of schedule in the country, Resch also helped the Pirates match last season’s program-record total of eight clean sheets—two of which came against teams who were nationally ranked at the time.

Resch also made significant contributions on offense, recording three goals and three assists, both of which were career-highs for him, as well as the most of any SHU defender this season. He finished his SHU career with five goals and three assists in total.

After such a season and career, Resch will be remembered as one of the best defenders—even best players—in the program’s history. The 29 MLS teams who passed on him will be likely to regret not having selected the six-foot-six Argentinian center back, who immediately adds strength, aerial superiority and—most of all—leadership to any roster he’s on.
