The Setonian’s Campus Life section has reigned strong, for the past nine years, as the place to find what’s going on around campus, learn about clubs and fellow peers and alumni, and provide a sneak peek into the life of a pirate student.
Campus Life became a section in 2016. Before 2016, The Setonian had a Features section. While that decision served the paper’s needs at the time, our new direction calls for its return.
The Decision
After almost a decade, the title “Campus Life” does not suit The Setonian’s ever-growing publication.
This change comes in light of the experiences of Editor-in-Chief Dominique Mercadante, a former campus life editor, and Managing Editor Sofia Kasbo, a former assistant news editor and features staff writer at The Temple News, prior to joining The Setonian. Both of their experiences shaped this decision.
What To Expect
With the combined love for feature writing, we concluded that “Features” encompasses more of the journalism that we want to produce. The title Campus Life was limiting, only allowing us to include stories and features about things that were campus life, and only reporting events happening on campus.
There was a fine line between what articles were Campus Life and what were News. Oftentimes, articles could be argued for both News and Campus Life. By changing the title to “Features,” this allows the section to have more space for creative, soft news pieces unique to the section—ones that can’t be found in News.
Features will showcase soft news ranging from topics like profiles, student life and culture, campus events, club spotlights, and student reactions.
Stay tuned for the feature stories to come, as we continue "to inform" and "to serve" the Seton Hall community.
