McCarthy pitches seven, Pirates score 10, in road win

The Seton Hall baseball team racked up a road win on Friday night, defeating the Oklahoma State Cowboys, 10-7, in Stillwater, Okla. In a day in which consistency of offense prevailed, Seton Hall’s Christian del Castillo was the catalyst of that offense with three RBI’s, including a first career-collegiate home run. Shane McCarthy got the start for the Hall and tossed seven innings, keeping the Cowboys off the board for six, before four unearned runs were scored in the seventh. The win moves Seton Hall to 7-8 on the season, with the Pirates edging closer to the .500 record they held before dropping three games to Florida Atlantic last weekend. The home run drove in Ryan Ramiz and gave the Pirates a 2-0 lead. The early onslaught continued in the top of the fourth, as Del Castillo and Tyler Shedler-McAvoy both contributed RBI-singles that doubled the Pirates’ lead. Following that, Rob Dadona doubled off the left-field wall and stretched the advantage to 6-0. Casey Dana then added an RBI single of his own in the fifth that give the Pirates a commanding 7-0 lead. Oklahoma State put together a rally in the bottom of the seventh inning, capitalizing on Pirate miscues to score four runs. Despite the momentum shift against the Pirates, McCarthy was able to limit the damage and get out of the inning with the lead intact, capping off his first win of the season. The Pirates gave up three runs on their way to three outs in the bottom of the ninth inning. Luckily, the Pirates had stretched the lead to 10-4 in the top of the ninth, with the three runs in the top of the inning proving to be more critical than initially thought. The Pirates will look to continue their success in Stillwater this weekend after the winning start on Friday. Seton Hall will play Missouri State on Saturday, March 17, then wrap up the weekend in a rematch with Oklahoma State on Sunday, March 18. Kyle Beck can be reached at or on Twitter @notkylebeck.
