Women's basketball defeats Army

The women's basketball held off a late game comeback by the Army Black Knights to get their second win of the season, 53-50, on Sunday afternoon.

The Pirates held a 10 point lead with 8:34 on the clock, but Army (1-1) cut the lead down to come to within three points in the final two minutes.

With a six point lead and following a foul by Army's Megan Doucette with 1:27, freshman Chizoba Ekedigwe missed two key free throws that would have extended the lead to eight.

Off the missed free throws Army's junior guard Molly Yardley grabbed the board and pushed the tempo up court.

Yardley passed to sophomore forward Jen Hazlett, who converted on a layup despite being fouled by junior guard Brittany Morris.

Hazlett converted the free throw for the three point play to cut the Pirate's lead to three.

After a missed jumper by senior guard Jasmine Crew, a foul was called on Ekedigwe. Senior guard Meghan Doucette missed the free throw.

Morris missed two free throws in the final 30 seconds and Hazlett grabbed the board off the second missed free throw. Off a time out the Black knights put the ball in the hands of Yardley.

Sophomore forward Elaine Swaby swatted a game tying three point attempt by Yardley three with :07 left.

The defense came up strong again, as the Pirates held the Black Knights to 31.6 percent shooting for the game.

Senior center Tajay Ashmeade recorded four of the Pirates seven blocks.

Crew scored twenty points for the second straight game as her 21 points led all scorers.

The Pirates will hit the road on Wednesday, Nov. 16 as the team will play New Hampshire.
