Pirates dominate at weekend tournament

The Seton Hall men’s and women’s cross country teams each came out victorious at last weekend’s Cappy Anderson Invitational in Princess Anne, Md.

Both squads showed dominance in their fields, headed by Jesse Southard on the men’s side, who blazed through the 8K run with a time of 26:36.30. Emma Newgarden was the star for the women’s team, as her first place finish led the way for a Pirates squad that saw six top-10 finishers.

Sisters Emily and Olivia Hernandez, who finished eighth and seventh last week respectively, again crossed the finish line consecutively, this time in the third and fourth place spots. Emily registered a time of 19:10.60, whereas Olivia clocked in with a time of 19.30.13.

Rounding out the top-10 for the women were Kassi Yocco in fifth place, Cristina Fernandez in eighth place, and Kiley Britten in 10th place.

The men’s side had multiple finishers in the top-10 as well. Jarod Moser, who captured the title at last year’s event, finished second place, just behind Southard at 27:01.80. Justin Allone, Ryan McNeilly and Cole Kretlow finished seventh, eighth, and ninth respectively to round out the top-10. The event saw no Seton Hall runner finishing outside of the top-30 in an 8K race that featured over 60 runners.

Asa Bloom recorded a 12th place finish at 28:50.20, while three Pirates, Jacob Wozar, Sirish Modhagala and Ricky Stephens finished consecutively at 16th, 17th and 18th places. Brandin Affrunti finished at 30:44.10 for 24th, while Matt Lemoine crossed the line at 31:27.50, placing 28th.

The Pirates return to action on Saturday, Oct. 6 at the NJIT Invitational in Newark, N.J.
