Students stitch together style, community with Seton Hall Fashion Club

SHU Fashion Club invites students to express themselves and connect with others who share an interest in fashion.

From upcycling clothing to sending members to walk the runway, the Seton Hall Fashion Club aims to offer students fashion upgrades.

Fatima Hamed, a freshman engineering major and president of the SHU Fashion Club, expressed what inspired the creation of the club.

“My love for fashion and self-expression has always connected me with some of the most incredible and artistic people,” Hamed said. “That same spirit of connection inspired me to found this club.”

She also shared the club's main goals.

“To inspire creativity,” Hamed said. “I want people to be themselves and express themselves through fashion.”

Hamed further mentioned that she wanted the club to create a community for three different kinds of individuals interested in fashion.

“People interested in modeling, people who are interested in fashion design, and the people who just like putting a nice outfit on and appreciate fashion,” Hamed said.

Mariam Hamed, a sophomore diplomacy major and the vice president of SHU Fashion Club, said the most rewarding aspect of being a part of the club is the community.

“Seeing how happy they are interacting with one another, sharing their experiences within fashion…has been amazing,” M. Hamed said.

M. Hamed also expressed that booking rooms was one of the main challenges of starting the club on campus, as “sometimes it is a bit tricky.”

Ivan Soria, a freshman graphic design and advertising major and member of SHU Fashion Club, expresses his hopes for the future of the club.

“I hope that it grows into something big and gets a lot of models involved,” Soria said.

On Thursday, the club hosted the “Deck Out Your Denim” event, where the e-board combined denim and design for students to experiment with creating their own pieces.

“Attendees will bring their own clothing, denim or not denim, to use jewelry that they could stick on,” Hamed said. “Basically, to create their own vintage jeans.”

Hamed further shared what she hopes students take away from the event.

“I want them to be creative, to express themselves, and to show what they like on their piece of clothing,” Hamed said. “I just want them to be comfortable, have fun, and enjoy working with other students.”

Anthony Guarino, a freshman graphic design and visual sound media major who attended the event, is considering going to more events.

“Even though I am not that interested in fashion, it is still an important part of everyone,” Guarino said. “I could always come here for the people, the bonding, or find something to do.”

Upon reflection, three words to describe the event came to Guarino’s mind.

“Creative, spontaneous, and sparkly,” Guarino said.

After a successful event, Hamed said the best way to get involved is to look for events posted on their Instagram or TikTok, since Engage can “get a little tricky sometimes.”

Coming up, the club is planning to have sewing and embroidery workshops as well as sketching events to “teach people the basics,” according to F. Hamed.

Additionally, the club is in the process of organizing and planning a gala on April 16.

Through events like “Deck Out Your Denim,” the SHU Fashion Club gives students a space to express themselves through fashion while building a creative community on campus.
