‘Crumes Culture’ wins election, prepares for upcoming term

The 2026-2027 executive board emphasizes community, accessibility and transparency.

Following last week’s Student Government Association (SGA) elections, the “Crumes Culture” ticket—composed of President Khalil Crumes, Vice President Krystal Steele, Secretary Mariam Hamed and Treasurer CJ Remigio—has been elected to lead the organization, securing 52% of the vote with 537 ballots cast in their favor.

SGA represents the student body and advocates for its interests throughout the year, introducing initiatives aimed at reflecting student needs.

Crumes, a junior accounting and criminal justice major, said accessibility will be central to his leadership.

His planned initiatives include weekly “Did You Know?” updates highlighting campus resources to increase transparency and awareness among students. These features would highlight Disability Support Services (DSS), the Career Center and Gourmet Dining Services

Crumes also hopes to implement a peer-to-peer academic mentoring program, pairing student organizations with underclassmen and integrating mentorship into upperclassmen courses.

He currently serves as a junior senator and chair of the Student Life Committee within SGA. Outside the organization, he is a resident assistant and a member of Alpha Kappa Psi and the Division of Volunteer Efforts (DOVE).

Steele, a junior diplomacy and international relations major, said she aims to promote courage and connection in her term as vice president.

On campus, Steele serves as a head resident assistant, has participated in Mock Trial and is a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma

Through SGA, she hopes to highlight local businesses through a career marketplace and year-long professional development opportunities to improve accessibility, ultimately fostering long-term relationships between Seton Hall, local businesses and community partners.

Hamed, a sophomore diplomacy and international relations major, said transparency will be a key focus during her term as secretary.

One initiative she hopes to implement is a “Culture Week,” where student organizations can showcase their identities through events such as cultural food fairs, panel discussions and displays of national flags.

Hamed currently serves as a vice chair of the SGA Student Life Committee and is a cast member in the Student Activities Board (SAB).

Remigio, a freshman business and law major, said he will prioritize accessibility as treasurer.

He also serves as a vice chair of the Student Life Committee, is a founding member of Zeta Psi and is a member of the Filipino League at Seton Hall (FLASH).

As treasurer, Remigio hopes to introduce a biweekly treasurer newsletter to keep student organizations informed.

The ticket’s central mission is reflected in its slogan: Transform SHU’s culture.

“I believe the best thing we can leave behind is culture,” Crumes said in a post on the ticket’s Instagram.

The new executive board will take office for the 2026-27 academic year.
