Catalon continues dominant stretch of play with fifth BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll selection

The Mansfield, Texas native averaged 16 points and shot nearly perfect from the free throw line in two BIG EAST games for the Pirates, earning her fifth conference honor of the season.

Junior guard Savannah Catalon continues to prove why she is one of the top players in the BIG EAST. On Monday, the junior guard was named to the conference’s Weekly Honor Roll once again. It is the fifth time this season that Catalon has earned the honor, showing how consistent she has been all throughout the year.

Catalon had a strong week in two important conference games for The Hall. On Jan. 29,the Pirates traveled to Georgetown for a tough win on the road. Catalon played 36 minutes and finished with 17 points, shooting 3-for-9 (33.3%) from the field with two made threes on the night. She also did a great job at the free-throw line, going 9-for-10 (90%). Her ability to get to the line and knock down free throws this season has been crazy to watch. She gets to the stripe every game, and has no problems  knocking them down.

Two days later, SHU  returned home to face Creighton. Although they lost, Catalon once again stepped up. She played 39 minutes and scored 15 points, while shooting 5-for-15 (33.3%) from the field and hitting three shots from beyond the arc . Defensively, she was strong again, finishing the game with three steals. She pressured the ball and created problems for Creighton’s guards. Her energy on both ends of the floor helped keep the Pirates competitive throughout the game.

For the week, Catalon averaged a team-high 16 points per game, while going 11-for-12 (91.7%) from the free-throw line in the two games combined. That kind of efficiency at the line is huge in close conference matchups. Every point matters in the BIG EAST, and Catalon made sure to take advantage of her opportunities at the line.

Catalon has been one of the team’s most reliable players all year. She has stepped up even more since sophomore guard Jada Eads season ending injury, plays heavy minutes in every game, handles the ball, scores when needed, and defends at a high level.

As the season moves deeper into BIG EAST play, the Pirates will continue to rely on Catalon. Every conference win matters in the standings, and she has shown she can step up when it counts. After earning another honor this week, Catalon and the Pirates will now prepare for a tough road matchup at St. John’s (17-7, 7-6 BIG EAST) on Saturday. If she keeps scoring, defending, and leading the way, SHU will have a strong chance to earn another important conference win.
