Bishop earns third BIG Freshman of the Week, Codio returns to Honor Roll

The backcourt duo shines during a split week, as Seton Hall prepares for a crucial matchup against Villanova.

Seton Hall women’s basketball’s Zahara Bishop and Jordana Codio both earned BIG EAST weekly honors after strong performances last week, helping the Pirates split two late-season conference games.

Bishop was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, while senior guard / forward Codio made the conference Weekly Honor Roll. Both played key roles in The Hall’s win over Xavier and their close loss to St. John’s on senior day.

Codio was the star of the show in SHU’s first game on Feb. 18, leading the Pirates to a 64–55 win at Xavier with one of her strongest outings of the season. The senior matched her career-high with 22 points while shooting an impressive 10-12 (83.3%) from the field. She also grabbed six rebounds and dished out four assists in 31 minutes. Codio’s all-around performance helped the Pirates control the game and showed once again why she has earned multiple weekly honors this season.

Codio also had a major impact on the Pirates’ second contest on Feb. 22. They hosted St. John’s at Walsh Gymnasium, and Codio scored a team-high 14 points and grabbed four rebounds while playing nearly the entire game. Her scoring helped keep the Pirates in the game late, despite the team's poor overall shooting (just 32%).

Bishop contributed in both games this week, stepping into a larger role after Jada Eads’s season-ending injury. Against St. John’s, she had five points and four rebounds in 23 minutes off the bench.

The freshman was even better in the win over Xavier, giving the Pirates valuable minutes on both ends of the floor. Bishop scored 10 points, grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and added two assists in nearly 30 minutes. Bishop has now earned the Freshman of the Week honor multiple times this season, a great sign for what’s to come ahead in the freshman’s career at SHU.

SHU’s next game on Feb. 26 could play a major role in the BIG EAST standings and postseason positioning, when the third-place Pirates host the second-place Villanova Wildcats (22-6, 15-4 BIG EAST) in a matchup with major conference implications. The Wildcats took down the Pirates 72-55 earlier this season at Villanova, so Seton Hall would like to return the favor at home.

The Pirates are 12–6 in league play, just behind the 15–4 Wildcats, with a chance to close the gap and strengthen their March Madness resume.
