Seton Hall will begin charging students $45 per night to remain in on-campus housing during Thanksgiving break, Residence Life confirmed. The service was previously offered at no cost and will also apply to Easter break and spring break later in the academic year.
James Calechman, director of residence life at SHU, said the new fee stems from increased operational costs. In previous years, only select residence halls remained open during break, but the SHU has expanded access after student requests for more flexibility. Keeping all halls open and staffed throughout the holiday requires additional funding, Calechman said.
Students who stay on campus will be billed after Thanksgiving break through their student accounts. Residence halls will close on Wednesday at 10 a.m. and reopen on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Students are eligible to apply for break housing if their permanent residence is more than four hours from campus, they are required to stay for a University-related job, internship or academic commitment, or if they are active, in-season athletes. Residence Life may also approve other exceptions on a case-by-case basis. Guests will not be permitted in residence halls during the break period.
The Bishop Dougherty Dining Hall will operate on adjusted hours over Thanksgiving break, serving food from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. All retail dining locations will remain closed during the break.
