Multiple authorities confirmed an incident Monday night at Boland Hall is under investigation, however rumors on Fizz, an anonymous social media app, remain unverified.
The Setonian reached out to Seton Hall Public Safety and the South Orange Police Department but both declined comment due to an ongoing investigation.
In an email to The Setonian, University Relations said SHU Public Safety and the South Orange Police Department responded “immediately to an incident between two students in a residence hall on the South Orange campus.”
“The situation was quickly resolved, and no students were physically injured,” University Relations said.
There were no Pirate Alerts to notify the student body of the incident, and no reports of it in the campus crime logs—which lists campus crime maintained by Public Safety—for Sept. 29 and Sept. 30.
“I think it’s concerning that people need to find out through these social media apps instead of through the university,” Charles McKinney, a senior economics and finance major said.
Even though SHU did not make an announcement following the incident, a senior biology student said SHU probably doesn’t want to cause unnecessary panic.
“It’s a tricky situation where we don’t know that much about it,” they said. “It would depend on what actually happened.”
A senior biochemistry major said they usually feel very safe on campus. They said they assume that some people have exaggerated last night’s incident.
“[Students] make it sound really bad,” they said. “If [SHU’s] not saying anything, maybe it was that bad.”
University Relations said “the safety and security of all members” of the SHU community “remain paramount.”
“The Dean of Students Office is reviewing this matter under the Student Code of Conduct, providing support to those involved, and the University is working in full cooperation with law enforcement. As this is an active investigation, we cannot share further details at this time,” University Relations added.
