10 things only SHU students understand

As Michaela Gillmore walked into the Galleon Dining Hall, her faced dropped. It was a Friday evening and BYOB had already closed by dinner time.

Gillmore, a sophomore religious studies major, just remembered that the Galleon was closed on the weekends.

“After a long week of classes, I really didn’t want to have to cook my own dinner,” said Gillmore. “I definitely regretted not getting a meal plan in that moment.”

Sometimes, there are joys and grievances that only a SHU student would understand. Here are 10 of these:

1. Not being able to go to the Galleon on weekends. As a resident, this becomes a place that you frequent often throughout the week. And every time the weekend comes around, you try to go there for dinner, only to remember the sting of last weekend when the realization hits.

2. Being able to go to mass at least once a day. Regardless of your faith, the chapel is a place that brings peace and calmness, that remains open to all students every day.

3. The Wi-Fi is the most unreliable thing since registration. Whether the server crashed and the Wi-Fi went out for a few days, or it’s just being unpredictable, there is no greater annoyance than trying to finish an assignment that’s due in a few minutes, and the internet won’t let you turn it in. Well, maybe Piratenet overloading during registration.

4. How great the rec center is. Having free access to a gym with the latest equipment, being able to take yoga and spin classes and swim in an almost-Olympic size pool is one of the best things about being a SHU student. And we don’t forget it.

5. Having to take CORE classes. Sitting through variations of the same class three years in a row can be rough. It’ll be okay everyone, just remember how great the rec center is.

6. Being 30 minutes from NYC. Whether you want an internship or are just looking for something to do on the weekend, one of the coolest things about SHU is how close the City is. Especially for us out-of-state students.

7. Understanding the value of free laundry. As SHU students we normally have to pay for laundry, but every now and then the machines will go haywire and we get free laundry for a bit. Value this time, because once we move out of college and into our own apartments, we’ll still have to pay for laundry.

8. Getting class off for Catholic holidays. Having classes being cancelled for mass at noon once a month, or essentially getting two spring breaks is probably the best feeling as a college student.

9. Fire drills. Fire safety is extremely important; however, having fire drills at least five times a semester can make people desensitized to the fire alarm going off. These fire drills can happen at any time, but please remember to evacuate the building, just in case, one day it’s not a drill.

10. Pirate Pride. Only SHU students understand Pirate pride. We take the good and the bad and at the end of the day, we’re all proud to be Pirates.
