DOVE raises awareness for homeless

From Nov. 16 through Nov. 21, the Division of Volunteer Efforts (DOVE) will bring National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week to Seton Hall. The effort was established by the National Coalition for the Homeless to promote education, action and awareness about hunger and homelessness.

DOVE Director Michelle Peterson said DOVE has sponsored National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week since 2007.

According to Peterson, the week will kick off with a number of masses in the chapel, where members of the SHU community will be encouraged to take home prayer cards featuring a story of a homeless person who benefits from St. John’s soup kitchen in Newark. In addition, the collections during Sunday mass on Nov. 16 will be donated to Catholic Charities in Newark.

On Monday, Nov. 17, DOVE will host a Faces of Homelessness panel in the Main Lounge which will include men and women who have experienced homelessness.

On Wednesday, Nov. 19, DOVE will screen “These Storied Streets,” a documentary following the struggles of homelessness nationally. The film will be shown in the McNulty Amphitheater at 8:30 p.m.

On Thursday, Nov. 20, DOVE invites the SHU community to give up lunch and attend “SHUp Kitchen Line” under the University Center awning. This event will allow participants to experience eating on a soup kitchen line and provide an opportunity to donate toward ending hunger and homelessness. Lunch will be held from 12:30-2 p.m. Students can sign up for this event in the DOVE office located in the Boland Hall basement.

According to Peterson, DOVE is collecting warm clothing (hats, scarves, coats, and gloves) and nonperishable foods throughout November. Students can bring these items and sign up for volunteer opportunities in the DOVE office.
