The women’s golf team shot a record-setting 291 score in the third round of the 2014 Williams & Mary Invitational on Tuesday. The score by the Pirates is the best in program history on a par-72 course.
Despite the historic outing, the Pirates still finished third out of 13 teams in the field with a 41-over-par.
In the opening round, Seton Hall shot a 314, but improved to a 300 in the following round. In the third and final round, junior Karlie Zabrosky led the team with a career-best 70 en route to the 291 mark.
"I could not be more proud of our performance these last two days," head coach Sara Doell told the Pirate Sports Network. "For a second straight tournament, we've received a strong effort from all five players. Any time we shoot a 300, we're pleased with the effort, but to come back and fire a 291 on top of it is truly a statement of the type of program we've become."
Seton Hall managed to beat out Big East rivals Georgetown, which placed sixth, and St. John’s, which finished 12th and 69 strokes behind the Pirates.
Senior Alison Kruse finished with the sixth-best individual score of the tournament, her second consecutive finish inside the top 10.
As a team, Seton Hall finished just a stroke behind the second-place finisher, Morehead State. Elon University topped the standings after shooting 19-over-par. Elon’s Kelsey Badmaev shot for par and finished as the top individual golfer of the invitational.
Senior McKenzie Cutter, who placed 25th individually, shot a career-low 73 in the final round of the tournament.
Seton Hall will have a quick turnaround as they head to the Yale Women’s Intercollegiate tournament, beginning Friday, Sept. 26 and running to Sunday, Sept. 28 in New Haven, Connecticut.
