Student journalism still alive and well

It is no secret that the journalism profession has constantly evolved over the past few decades. What was once dominated by personalities such as Edward R. Murrow or Walter Kronkite has now taken many forms. From professionals to citizen journalists to student journalists, the practice of journalism is continuing to grow, yet many fear it has ceased to prosper.

However, it should be made perfectly clear that journalism is alive and well, especially the practices of student journalists, who continue to thrive and prosper, as is evident by the numerous awards and accolades bestowed upon student media.

The Setonian has continued to earn numerous awards in college media, placing in various cat­egories from the New Jersey Press Association. Among those, this year, The Setonian took first place for editorial writing arts and entertainment writing, and sports photography, second place in layout and design and third place in biography/ personality profile, column/opinion writing, en­terprise/investigative reporting and sports photog­raphy. These added up to give The Setonian the most awards out of any college weekly in the state of New Jersey.

What shows even more is the fact that these awards were not all earned by editors, but other student journalists who carry the torch for report­ing and photojournalism. The dedication of stu­dents further proves that student journalism is, in fact, alive and well, and will continue to thrive in the future.

We need not get bogged down in making print papers obsolete, because there is still a place for them. There are still awards to be won. No matter what, we will continue to learn and flourish.
