According to multiple reports, Kevin Willard will be the next head coach of Seton Hall's men's basketball team.
At just 34 years old Willard will be the youngest head coach in the school's history.
He is coming to Seton Hall with an honorable track record. Willard served as an assistant under Rick Pitino for ten years.
Willard helped Pitino coach the Boston Celtics for four seasons beginning in 1997.
When Pitino left Boston to coach NCAA basketball at Louisville in 2001, he took Willard with him.
After working with Pitino in the NBA and at the college level, Willard made the move to Iona in 2007 where he was head coach for three seasons. In those three years at Iona Willard accumulated an overall record of 45-49.
This season Willard was named the MAAC Coach of the Year, going 21-10 and 12-6 in conference.
If not offered the head coaching job at Iona, it is likely that ex-Pirate Shaheen Halloway will follow Willard to South Orange and serve as an assistant coach. Currently an assistant at Iona, Halloway played point guard for the Hall from 1996-2000.
Along with Halloway it is probable that Steve Sauers, an original member of former Seton Hall head coach Bobby Gonzalez's coaching staff, will make the move with Willard.
The reported hiring of Willard comes the same day as Fran McCaffery, regarded as Seton Hall's top choice for their coaching vacancy, left Siena for the head coaching job at Iowa.
After the McCaffery moved was announced, Seton Hall reportedly moved quick and completed the deal with Willard.
A press conference will be held to announce the hiring of Willard Wednesday afternoon, according to multiple reports.
