The California native chose Seton Hall over the likes of Nevada, Pepperdine, UCSB, Washington State, New Mexico, TCU, Stanford and LMU. Assistant coach Grant Billmeier was heavily involved with Powell's recruitment, and former Pirates guard Pookey Wigington pointed the high school junior in the directio of the Pirates he is an assistant coach at Ribet Academy.

“[Wigington’s] been telling me how the East Coast is,” said Powell the Asbury Park Press. “The East Coast is into the hard-hat mentality, playing hard, working hard, scrapping on the floor. I can bring those things to the East Coast. It’s not going to be a hard transition for me.”

A 6-foot-5, 190-pound small forward, Powell is ranked at 133 among national prospects in the 247Sports Composite Rankings. Accustomed to playing either the two or three, Powell possesses a strong shooting range and rebounds well. He averaged 19 points and nine rebounds per game, leading Ribet to California's Division I state title as a junior.
