Residents of New Jersey would be hard pressed to believe the validity of the state’s nickname – The Garden State. However, a drive south on the turnpike or west on Route 78 will reveal acres of farmland which produce New Jersey’s main exports – crops, particularly tomatoes and blueberries. While New Jersey still exports crops throughout the country, in recent years the state’s main export has become basketball talent.
The Seton Hall Pirates baseball team got back into the win column on Wednesday afternoon with an 11-7 win over Wagner.
From March 12 to 16, the Seton Hall baseball team was in Port Charlotte, Fla. competing in the Snowbird Classic. Out of the five games that the team played, it won two of them. Heading out of the break, the team sits at a 3-12 record.
The Seton Hall women’s tennis team wrapped up a successful week over spring break, going 2-1 against a mix of non-conference and Big East opponents.
This year’s Seton Hall team was never supposed to sniff Big East Championship Saturday at Madison Square Garden. Coming off a week in which it knocked off two ranked conference foes and secured a spot in the NCAA Tournament, Seton Hall picked up where it left off against Georgetown in the first round of the Big East Tournament and downed the Hoyas by a final score of 73-57 behind a dominant performance from Myles Powell.
As the postseason got underway for the Pirates on Saturday afternoon with the beginning of the Big East tournament, the women’s basketball team was unable to lengthen its tenure, as Seton Hall was defeated by St. John’s, 76-51.
Just over one round of golf was played at the women’s River Landing classic earlier this week, as the final two rounds of the event were cut short due to incoming darkness rendering the course unplayable on Monday.
Courtney McCardle has enjoyed a very decorated four-year career at Seton Hall and finished her last races for the Pirates’ swimming and diving team with her named etched in the record books.

There are three certainties about the month of March, and the first two involve the color green – the return of verdant leaves as spring begins and the proliferation of green-clad revelers celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. The third certainty is the madness caused by the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. Currently, Seton Hall fans are in a frenzy over whether the Pirates will be invited to the “Big Dance” or on the outside looking in. In a month of certainties, Seton Hall’s tournament status is anything but that.
The NFL combine is the most overrated, nitpicked and overemphasized event in all of sports. The idea of scouting a player’s skill set heavily dependent on 40-yard-dashes and shuttle runs is bewildering. Game film speaks for itself on how a player performs, not how many inches their vertical jump is.
In today’s sports universe, there should be no such thing as a “hometown discount.”
In the battle of the Big East superstars, Myles Powell came out with the upper hand in more ways than one. He finished with 34 points as compared to Markus Howard’s six points, but the biggest number on the scoreboard was the final score, not the individual statistics, as Seton Hall came away with a 74-63 victory over No. 16 Marquette.
