Seton Hall men’s basketball head coach Shaheen Holloway said one of his priorities this portal season was to “get some shooters” —and now he’s got one.
On Tuesday, On3’s Joe Tipton reported that Kareem Thomas, a 6–foot-5 sophomore guard from Dartmouth, has committed to SHU out of the transfer portal.
Starting in all 26 games for the Big Green last season, Thomas averaged a team-high 15.9 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 29.2 minutes per game. A score-first guard, he set a career-high in single season points last season with 414, while leading the team in the category.
Although impressive numbers in themselves, Thomas’ shooting splits are really what jump off the statsheet: the Wilmington, Delaware native shot 44.8% from the field on 10.0 attempts per game, while also shooting 79.5% from the line.
But more importantly for SHU’s purposes, Thomas shot 44.7% from beyond the arc last season—the second-highest 3-point percentage in the Ivy League, trailing the leader by just 0.06%—on 4.0 attempts per game.
Thomas immediately becomes The Hall’s best shooter with his commitment, helping address a much-needed area of improvement for the Pirates, who finished the season among the worst three-point shooting teams in the nation.
Thomas’s commitment also adds to a roster already loaded with depth at the guard position, being the fourth of such to commit out of the transfer portal, and the sixth overall on the roster as it currently stands.
But with his 6-foot-5 frame, it's possible that Holloway will play Thomas at the small forward position, his shooting ability helping to stretch the floor and creating driving lanes for his teammates.
