The first match of the regular season for Seton Hall women’s soccer resulted in a 2-1 overtime loss against Saint Joseph’s on Friday night.
In the tightly contested matchup, neither team scored a goal until the second half. The Hall was the first to strike in the match, with senior co-captain Frankie Maier scoring six minutes into the second half. The goal was the third of Maier’s career and her first in a season opener.
After the goal by Maier, the Hawks struck back with a goal of their own at the 58th-minute mark. The game remained tied for the remainder of the second half, forcing overtime.
The tie was finally broken in when Saint Joseph’s Dakota Mills scored her second goal of the evening, ultimately ending the game in the Hawks’ favor.
Sophomore Pirate goalkeeper Anna MacLean contributed to the Hall’s defensive efforts by recording five saves in the match. She outmatched Saint Joseph’s keeper Cameron Perrott, who totaled three stops.
Subsequent to Friday night’s outcome, the Hall’s record in season openers falls to 1-2-0 under third-year coach Rick Stainton.
To finish off its current road trip, the Hall will aim to rebound against Army on Monday, Aug. 22. Game time in West Point is set for 7:00 p.m.
