Baseball dominates Wagner in midweek makeup game

The Pirates’ offense erupts for a big win over the Seahawks.

Seton Hall baseball defeated Wagner, 14-1, behind a dominant offensive performance at Mike Sheppard, Sr. Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. The Pirates’ bats came alive early and never slowed down, powering a commanding win in non-conference action.

The Hall jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning. After junior infielder Gabe Cavazzoni drew a walk and stole second, junior outfielder Jake Lopez advanced to third on a bunt. With the bases loaded, junior infielder Ryan Frontera delivered a two-run single to left field to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead. Later in the inning, junior infielder Frankie Scrivanic added an RBI single to extend the advantage to 3-0.

The Pirates continued to build momentum in the third inning, putting together a six-run frame to blow the game open. Cavazzoni drove in two runs with a double down the left field line, and junior catcher Aidan Sengenberger followed with a two-run double of his own. A throwing error allowed an additional run to score, extending The Hall’s lead 8-0.

SHU’s offense remained aggressive at the plate in the fifth inning, adding five more runs. Sengenberger and Frontera each recorded RBI doubles, while sophomore infielder Ty Acker drove in a run on a groundout. Freshman catcher Ryan Strnad capped off the inning with a two-run single to push the Pirates’ lead to 13-0.

But SHU didn’t stop there. The Hall’s offense remained aggressive at the plate in the fifth inning, adding five more runs. Sengenberger and Frontera each recorded RBI doubles, while Acker drove in a run on a groundout. Ryan Strnad capped off the inning with a two-run single to push the Pirates’ lead to 13-0.

Frontera and Sengenberger led the offensive effort with multiple RBIs, while Cavazzoni reached base several times and contributed two runs batted in. The Pirates capitalized on walks and timely hitting throughout the game, consistently putting pressure on Wagner’s pitching staff.

On the mound, freshman right-handed pitcher Jason Kuhn earned the win for SHU, tossing five scoreless innings while allowing just two hits and striking out four batters. Wagner struggled to generate consistent offense against Kuhn, with its lineup held in check through the first five innings. Sophomore right-handed pitcher Gregory Bruno entered in relief in the sixth inning as the Pirates maintained control.

The Seahawks scored their lone run in the sixth inning after loading the bases, bringing a runner home on a groundout. Despite the brief momentum, SHU remained firmly in control of the game.

The Hall responded in the bottom half of the inning as Lopez crossed the plate on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 14-1. The Pirates’ early offensive surge proved more than enough as they closed out the game without further trouble.

SHU improved to 8-8 on the season and their next matchup will be on Friday as the Pirates host Hofstra back at Mike Sheppard Sr. Field.
