Seton Hall women’s basketball senior guard Jordana Codio was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday after a strong week for the Pirates (11-5, 5-2 BIG EAST). It is the second time this season that Codio has received such recognition, showing her impact on her new team.
Codio earned the honor after her performance in The Hall’s bounce-back victory at Providence last Thursday. The game didn’t start well for the Pirates, as they struggled in the first quarter and had their worst opening period of the season. Despite the slow start, Seton Hall bounced back and won the next three quarters.
Codio helped lead the Pirates' turnaround offensively. The senior guard scored a team-high 17 points while also grabbing three rebounds and recording a career-high four steals. Her energy on defense helped keep the Pirates' intensity high throughout the game, as SHU forced turnovers and turned them into points. Codio’s defensive pressure was especially important in the second quarter, when the Pirates began to close the gap after trailing 12-4 at the end of the first quarter.
As the game continued, SHU settled in and took control. Providence had trouble finding consistent offense once The Hall increased their defensive intensity, and Codio’s effort played a major role in that shift.
Codio joined SHU this season as a transfer from the University of Texas. Since arriving in South Orange, she has quickly become a key piece in the Pirates’ lineup. Through 16 games this season, Codio is averaging 10.9 points, 3.8 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 0.8 blocks per game. She is also shooting 37.6% from the field and 73% from the line. Her ability to contribute to several areas has made her one of SHU’s most reliable players and a great leader.
Around the BIG EAST, No. 1 UConn’s Sarah Strong was named Player of the Week, while her teammate Bianca Quinonez earned Freshman of the Week honors. Codio was one of several players named to the Weekly Honor Roll, joining Ava Zediker of Creighton, Kate Novik of DePaul, Olivia Porter of Marquette, and Jasmine Bascoe of Villanova.
Codio’s honor roll selection highlights the impact she has had so far this season. Her performance against the Friars showed her ability to lead through scoring and defense, helping her team win. As SHU continues its BIG EAST schedule, Codio remains an important part of the Pirates’ success.
The Hall currently holds an 11-5 overall record and is 5-2 in conference play. That record places the Pirates near the top of the BIG EAST standings at fourth and their win over the Friars was an important bounce-back after being dominated on the road by the Huskies the week prior.
The Pirates are set to host Marquette (11-5, 5-2 BIG EAST) on Jan. 14, at Walsh Gymnasium, with another chance for them to build momentum in league play and protect their home court.
