The Seton Hall women's tennis team traveled to Annapolis, Md. this past weekend to take part in the Navy Blue & Gold Invitational, hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy. The tournament featured a bevy of teams, with the Big Ten, A10, AAC, American East and Colonial Athletic Conference among the many leagues that were represented. Seton Hall was the lone participant from the Big East.
The tournament began on Friday, with the Pirates collectively getting off to a rough start in what was a tough bracket. Navy’s Ansofi Wreder defeated Seton Hall’s Melody Taal 7-6(4), 6-3, while Carlee Conway of those same Midshipmen defeated the Pirates’ Katie Kim, 6-3, 6-3.

Also on Friday, the Pirates endured a rivalry meeting with Jacqueline Cochrane of Rutgers lining up against Michal Matson of Seton Hall. Cochran got the best of Matson in this encounter, 7-5, 6-2.
The forgettable outing continued as Kamilla Beisanova of George Washington defeated Anniek Jansen of Seton Hall, after Jansen withdrew in the middle of the match. In doubles, the UConn combination of Fitz-Randolph and Perrotta beat the Seton Hall pairing of Taal and Matson, 6-1, while Hahn and Haigwood of George Mason defeated Jansen and Kim, 6-4.
Saturday saw the Pirates overcome some of the adversity from Friday and redeem themselves in doubles play, earning two victories on the day. Taal and Matson overcame the George Mason combination of Green and Lee in a down-to-the-wire 7-6(5), while Jansen and Kim rolled through Binghamton’s double of Kong and Roma, 6-0.
Despite the response in doubles action, the Pirates saw their hard work in singles play go without reward again on Saturday, as Janson, Kim, Matson and Taal once again fell to their competition.
The Pirates had one more day scheduled at the Invitational, with the final results for Sunday’s action still yet to be posted. This article will be updated as soon as those results are released.
