Pirates secure bounce back win against Rider

The Seton Hall men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams retaliated after Friday’s loss to UMBC, coming out victorious against Rider on Saturday afternoon. The men won by a score of 161-139, while the women won by a final tally of 173-99. The Hall won two events in diving, with Taylor Jackson winning the one-meter and three-meter dive on the women’s side, as the men fell short in the same two events. Courtney Regan finished first in the 1000-yard freestyle and rounded out the top three in the 200-yard breaststroke. Additionally, Sara Ouellette had two first places finishes in individual races as she won both the 200-yard freestyle and the 200-yard backstroke. On the men’s side, Tyler Kauth has picked off from where he left off last year as a freshman, getting the top spot in the 200-yard backstroke on Saturday following two individual second place finishes on Friday. Kauth credits his stroke technique for his offseason improvements. “I took it down a notch on the cardio and focused a lot more on stroke technique and kicking underwater – my under-waters have gotten a lot better this year,” Kauth said. “Over the summer I go back and swim with my club team. I focus a lot more on just the mechanics of the stroke, that way my swimming is easier and more efficient.” Coming off a Big East Championship where Derek Sapp served as an assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s teams, Sapp, now head coach, knows the team can match the success of last season if they emphasize the little things which go into pulling off the ultimate prize. “We’re working really hard in the water,” Sapp said. “We’re sore, beat up and tired right now, so for them to get up and swim when they’re tired gives them a lot more confidence. When they are rested, when they are feeling really good, they should be able to make a statement.” Up next for both swimming and diving sides is the SHU Tri-Meet, where they will take on Monmouth and Montclair State University. That meet is set for Saturday, Oct. 21, at 3 p.m. in the Arthur E. Imperatore Natatorium. Evando Thompson can be reached at Evando.thompson@student.shu.edu or on Twitter @Thompsev.
