The Pirates were bitten by the injury bug with four of their six starters nicked up. The Pirates barely missed out on a point in their doubles matches. Sophomore Marisa Quevedo and senior Julia Keenan won their doubles match 6-3. However, Hannah Liljekvist and Luize Strike narrowly lost with a score of 7-6. In singles, freshman Anna Fajnorova posted the lone win for the Pirates with an impressive 6-3, 6-1 victory. Pirates coach Greg Wyzykowski was happy with his team’s performance. “We saw a big improvement in doubles,” he said. “We were not as strong in the Fall Tournament so we did much better today.” Wyzykowski was also optimistic regarding the outlook of his team. “The thing that was really promising was the fighting spirit. We had four of our starting six injured which was tough,” he said. “The trainers were constantly attending to our players to finish the match.” Those injuries hurt the Pirates, and perhaps even cost them a win. Looking forward to the next match, Wyzykowski noted the team’s health concerns. “It’s a matter of getting healthy,” he said. “We have a couple days. Three of the girls in the tournament are injured.  They aren’t going to get healthy in a couple days.” This was the only home match of the fall for the Pirates. Their next tournament starts next Thursday, Oct. 22.  It will run all the way until Monday, Oct. 26.   Andrew Lombardo can be reached at andrew.lombardo@student.shu.edu
