The Seton Hall women’s soccer team lost to Butler in a chilly Sunday afternoon match to drop to 2-11-2 on the season.
The team wore pink jerseys and accessories to support breast cancer awareness.
The Pirates played well early on in the first half, pushing the pace from the start. The best chance of the game came early on for Seton Hall when Eva Gonzalez came out in front of the Butler goalkeeper and put a shot high that hit the crossbar.
After that chance, Butler pushed the pace and began to control possession through the later part of the first half. There were not many great scoring chances in the first half, but the Pirates were leading in shots, 4-3, at the end of the half.
Even though Seton Hall lead in shots in the first half, they barely touched the offensive zone in the second half. Butler dominated in possession and chances, and eventually found the back of the net.
Butler’s Serina Kashimoto scored off of a free kick on the left side of the field, and her shot went in the top right corner of the net past Pirates goalkeeper Illissa Blackshear.
Seton Hall tried to push back after the goal but failed, and Butler proved to be too much to handle in the possession front, as the Pirates could not control the ball.
Coach Rick Stainton liked the Pirates’ play against the impressive Bulldogs team.
“We played really well,” Stainton said. “Exceptionally on defense and created some attacking for us, which we could have had a couple of early ones.”
Stainton agreed that possession was a key problem in the loss to Butler. He said that the lack of possession in the game was “running them ragged”, and cited fouling deep in the team’s own end as a problem that was caused directly by not possessing.
Stainton also added that the next opponent, Georgetown, is a “possession-oriented team”, and he wants the squad to keep improving on defense and having the ball more.
The Pirates will hit the road on Thursday to take on Georgetown at 3 p.m.
