Volleyball wins first of Saturday double-header

The women’s volleyball team rallied late on Saturday to defeat the University of Central Arkansas at the UNLV Invitational in Las Vegas, Nevada, winning three sets to two. [caption id="attachment_10660" align="alignleft" width="268"]Seton Hall Athletics Seton Hall Athletics[/caption] The Pirates (1-1), swept by the University of Nebraska-Omaha in three sets on Friday, bounced back in Saturday’s match, winning the final two sets over the Bears. Junior Dani Schroeder led the team in kills, with 16 total, as well as three service aces. Freshman Cherise Hennigan also contributed with 14 kills in the match. The Pirates took the first set over Central Arkansas, 25-19. They would quickly fall behind, losing the next two sets, 25-17 and 24-15. The teams fought tooth and nail in set four, with Seton Hall edging out the Bears 25-23.  The Pirates would then win the decisive fifth set, 15-9. The Hall looked to both veterans and newcomers to take charge in the match. Reigning Big East Libero of the Year Tessa Fournier led the team with 19 digs, and sophomore Sarah Kenneweg also had nine digs. Freshman Sophia Coffey contributed with 12 digs, and freshman Abby Thelen had six kills for Seton Hall. Senior Heather Schnars led Central Arkansas (0-2) with 20 kills while senior Corri Hunt had 15 digs. The Pirates will have a quick transition to their next match is Saturday at 10 p.m. against UNLV – a double-header for SHU.  It will be their last game before heading home to play in historic Walsh Gymnasium next weekend, Sep. 4-5, in the Seton Hall Classic.
