Letter to the Editor: Community shares thoughts on commencement Michael R. Martino

Life is marked with moments of notable transition. Some leave a lasting impression, some pass without notice. For the college senior and their supportive families, the pomp and circumstance of graduation marks a significant launching point. Traditionally the graduation day includes a passionate address of wisdom and encouragement delivered by a respected, accomplished and thoughtful orator. Universities generally give great thought to the person they choose to address their graduates, as they send them off to represent their university, families and themselves in their chosen endeavors. Yes many graduation addresses are pedantic and uninspiring. But, at times there are those that carry true meaning. Unfortunately, the Seton Hall University class of 2015 will not have the opportunity to be inspired by a keynote commencement address. It is my understanding that this year SHU will forgo a keynote speaker and instead opt for speeches by class representatives. While I am just one parent, intending to travel from Minnesota to watch proudly as my daughter crosses the stage, I ask that SHU reconsider denying the graduates an inspiring key note speech on their special day. Michael R. Martino is a parent of a Seton Hall student graduating in 2015. He can be reached at michael.martino@morganstanley.com.
