The grass will be greener on the Galleon Lawn

The process of having grass reinstalled on the Galleon Lawn is moving forward.

The lawn space, located between the cafeteria and South Orange Avenue, was covered with gravel last fall to ease the congested parking situation on campus. It was seen as a temporary solution while the parking deck addition was under construction, according to John Signorello, associate vice president of Facilities and Operations.

“Now that the deck addition is complete, the temporary lot is being removed and the Galleon lawn is being returned to a green lawn area.”

The project is proceeding in good time. Although sod can be installed at almost any time of the year, the best time is in late summer and early fall when temperatures are cooler but grass continues to grow, according to Signorello.

Facilities delayed the project in order to accommodate the Blue Day carnival after the class of 2018’s Convocation on Sunday Aug. 24. While that event was fun, students can look forward to getting back that green space for at least a couple weeks until the cold weather hits.

Campus groups like St. Paul’s Outreach are excited to getting the green space back.

Mission Leader Rita Buganski said, “Now the guys can play Frisbee and don’t have to walk down South Orange Avenue to play on the park.”

According to Signorello, the project should be completed by the end of this week.
