Cory Booker, New Jersey's new Democratic senator and former mayor of Newark, is very popular on Twitter.
His thoughtful tweeting involved Seton Hall this week when a woman tweeted at him asking if he would speak at the Seton Hall commencement in May. "Wow, I'd love to," Booker responded. "It would be quite an honor."
A retweet tagged the University's Twitter account, @setonhall.
This is a huge deal and the University should move to select a Speaker Committee sooner rather than later.
Likewise, the senior class should be more involved in knowing who is being considered to speak, For example a survey could ask about several possible speakers to gauge who the class would like to hear from.
Brian Williams, a New Jersey native and anchor of NBC Nightly News, spoke to the graduating class of 2006.
Gov. Chris Christie gave an extremely interesting commencement speech in 2011.
A motivational speaker from Verona, N.J., part of Essex County with South Orange, impressed the class of 2012 after spending time with the men's basketball team.
Based on these speakers alone, the University has no reason to at the very least reach out to Booker's office and see if he is available on May 19.
We hope that if he has not already been called, that there are plans to call. We understand these events take a great deal of planning, but there is no harm in asking.
The opinion of the Editorial Board is that Senator Booker would be one of the most incredible speakers the school has seen in some time.
