Police arrest suspect in Grove Terrace shooting

Newark resident, 24-year-old Kaiyri Bennett was arrested on Thurs. June 13 in regards to the shooting and assault that occurred on May 8, 2012 at the Seton Hall Grove Terrace apartments, according to the South Orange police blotter.

It read that the suspect was arrested "after detectives determined through their investigation that he was one of the actors involved in the robbery and firearm assault of a Seton Hall University student."

South Orange Police Chief Chelel said detectives received information regarding the involvement of Bennett after speaking with other individuals.

"We came up with this person through hard detective work, after a year," Chelel said. "Detectives are working on the third person, there were three people involved...but it doesn't matter how long it takes."

He said Bennett was arrested at the corner of Salem on South Orange Avenue.

"He was picked up on the corner, came into headquarters and charged with robbery and conspiracy," Chelel said.

Bennett is faced with $100 thousand bail, according to Chelel.

Two male Seton Hall students were assaulted with a handgun last year at a second floor apartment in Grove Terrace. The one, after being shot in the arm, ran to police headquarters down the street while the other was pistol whipped in the head, according to earlier reports.

Chelel said he believes the three people involved in the crime wen to the apartment to commit a robbery and did not expect resistance from the students inside.

"A struggle inside led to one person being shot," Chelel said. "They didn't expect resistance."

The investigation remains ongoing.
