Final exam schedule changed for spring

The final exam schedule was late coming out this year because of complications with the new class schedule, according to Mary Ellen Farrell, University Registrar.

Farrell said work had to be done so that the University could provide rooms for every course.

"The spring exam schedule has some minor changes that were made," Farrell said, "to one, spread out the exams to make better use of classroom space and two, to eliminate potential room conflicts with some of the new schedule components."

She said one of the obstacles to work around was a course that runs in an extended time block on a single day.

"We needed to make sure that there was no potential classroom conflict for these sessions," Farrell said.

According to Farrell, the changes to the final exam schedule this year were minimal.

"The changes that are reflected are few in number, but our hope is that they provide a more workable exam framework for faculty and students," she said.

Farrell added that there are always room conflicts that arise when the University schedules the final exams, usually 30 to 40. "We address these problems by communicating with the professors involved to work out viable alternatives with respect to exam room assignments," Farrell said.

Farrell said the new course schedule may actually improve the chances of these problems being fewer in number.

"Hopefully, the more standardized structure of the new course schedule will work toward eliminating many of these problems," Farrell said.

She said that the Registrar's office will review the final exam schedule to ensure its workability, just as it always does.
