Career fair brings over 100 employers to campus

Over 100 employers filled the field house in the Richie Regan rec center this past Wednesday for this year's largest career event on campus, according to Assistant Director of the Career Center Sandra Maloney.

Maloney said the Career Center organized the fair this year as opportunities for jobs, internships and networking for students of all years and majors. The event hosted 107 employers, many of which have been to multiple career fairs and some even brought along Seton Hall alumni employees.

"The life's purpose of the Career Center is to get you guys jobs," Maloney said. "A lot of students come back and recruit here."

According to Maloney, the Center works year-round to market for employers at events similar to these.

"The Center exists only to get jobs," Maloney said.

Employers represented at the event ranged from military services to radio stations to big name-brand companies, such as Target and Kohl's. The full list of registered employers is offered online by the Career Center.

Students of all majors attended the event in hopes of snagging a summer internship, or to test the waters of the competitive job market in an approachable environment on campus, according to Maloney.

"I just decided to come in here and check out everything," sophomore Ryan Kenter said. "Every booth the people have been nice and approachable."

Maloney said it is a common misconception that job fairs are exclusively for business majors. There are opportunities for everyone at career fairs, but "networking is key."

Khol's, an employer at the fair, has attended around five times now. At the career fair this past Wednesday, they were offering store manager internships, according to Assistant Store Manager Zakiyyah Muhammad.

"We have a great success rate for students here," Muhammad said.

Although this is the biggest on-campus career event of the year, according to Maloney, the Career Center also offers specialized "niche" career events for different majors. On March 19 the Career Center will host a communications career fair in the Chancellors Suite.

Maloney said other similar events include the Center's co-sponsoring of one of the biggest career events in the state hosted at Madison Square Garden during the Big East Finals week.

According to Maloney, events like the career fair at Seton Hall are important for students because employers are very accessible to students for networking as opposed to big events that are open to the whole state.
