Laundry renovations underway

In his President’s Report of last semester, Student Government Association (SGA) president Rishi Shah said that “all” of the laundry rooms on campus will be remodeled, “most likely” in the 2019 school year.

These new laundry rooms may even provide no-charge laundry, such as is found in the laundry room at Ora Manor.

Shah, a junior Finance, Management and Philosophy major, said via email that the new laundry rooms, “would be important to students as they would no longer have to accumulate massive loads of laundry to put all in one load. This would in turn allow students to freely do smaller loads resulting in less damage to machines and cleaner clothes.”

“I remember having to dry my clothes for two or three cycles and that was due to the fact that I overloaded the machine to initially save money (obviously that did not turn in my favor),” Shah said.

Currently, the laundry rooms in Serra Hall cost $1.25 for a wash and $1.25 for the dryer. This may not seem like a large amount of money, but it adds up.

When asked how much she spends on laundry, Marissa Ciavatti, sophomore Accounting major said in an in-person interview, “About $10 dollars per month.”

The details of no-charge laundry are still being ironed out. Dr. Tracy Gottlieb, Vice President of Student Services, said via email, “I am not sure if there will be ‘free ‘(of course, nothing is ever free) laundry services, it’s one idea. But the cost would be wrapped into the cost of housing.”

Shah clarified in his President’s Report, “[the] estimated increase in housing [is] $50.”

Ciavatti, like many students, would like no-charge laundry. However, when asked whether she believes the housing fee should be raised to cover the cost of laundry, she said, “The school should offer [no-charge laundry] as is.”

When contacted, the University could provide no further information on this issue.
