Millions without power across state as Isaias batters New Jersey

Tropical Storm Isaias made landfall in New Jersey this afternoon, leaving nearly 1.3 million people without power statewide, according to a power outage map that tracks the state’s major utility companies.

Much of Essex County, where Seton Hall’s South Orange, Newark and Interprofessional Health Sciences campuses reside, remains under a tropical storm warning until further notice. According to the New York Office of the National Weather Service, a flash flood watch will also remain in effect for South Orange until 6:00 am Wednesday.

Power outages and downed trees have also been reported around South Orange Village, including at the Department of Water and Power. According to a notice form the Village’s emergency alert system, all hazard calls should instead be directed to the South Orange Police Department’s non-emergency line until further notice.

Tropical Storm Isaias is the second hurricane of the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season and made its first landfall in the Bahamas before pitching north and making landfall again as a Category 1 hurricane in North Carolina at 11 pm on Monday. In the hours since, the storm left a path of destruction, sparking flooding and fires and killing at least two people in North Carolina in tornadoes that were sparked by the storm.

N.J. Gov. Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency for on Monday in preparation from storm and warned drivers via Twitter to stay off the roads.
