Disney Plus brings old and new shows to light

Disney Plus launched on Nov. 12 in America, Canada and the Netherlands. It is a streaming service which allows viewers to watch old and new Disney shows and movies. Some find the service a gift to people who continue to love Disney and wish to be able to watch the shows and movies from their childhood.

Although Disney Plus has many of the shows and movies that many students watched growing up, others find that it still falls short with some of its content. The service does not have a select few shows that Disney had made years ago.

Bryanna Rosado, a freshman elementary and special education major, said she wishes that the service would provide “Sonny with a Chance” because it was a show she really enjoyed as a kid. Disney’s “A Christmas Carol” is another classic that cannot be found on the service. However, that does not stop her from enjoying shows like “Hannah Montana” or “Wizards of Waverly Place.”

“They were my absolute favorite growing up,” Rosado said. “I was very excited to be able to watch them whenever I wanted.”

“High School Musical: The Musical: The Series†is a new series available on Disney Plus.

When asked what she would recommend, Rosado said that “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series” is definitely one to try out.

She said, “At first I thought they were going to try and make the show so much like the movie, but they took it in another direction and I really enjoyed it.”

Amanda Neilsen, a freshman special education major, recommended people to watch the older Disney shows. She also recommended “Lemonade Mouth” for any new watchers.

Carlie Chukrallah, a freshman elementary and special education major, said, “I think people should watch some of Disney’s original movies. They were really enjoyable for me as a kid, and I think people would still enjoy them today.”

Rosado and Neilsen voiced some problems they have with the streaming service. Both said they are annoyed that the service only releases one episode a week for their original shows. Disney Plus joins the field of many other streaming services like Netflix and Hulu. For some students, like Neilsen, they find it annoying to pay for another streaming service.

With this frustration, many students are doing what they do to watch Netflix: they use someone else’s account. Rosado’s uncle gave her access to his account allowing her to use the service. Chukrallah does not have an account of her own either.

“I use my friend’s account,” she said. “He bought Disney Plus and only allowed a few close friends access.”
