Thanksgiving is for families of all kinds

Thanksgiving is quickly approaching, Pirates. The Setonian won’t be publishing next Thursday because we’ll all be busy eating our weight in carbs, which is the true meaning of the holiday. So, we wanted to leave the Seton Hall community with a little message as we all go into our week off.

The holidays are a hard time for a lot of people. While some have big, happy, loving families who take holiday planning very seriously and have long-standing traditions that have been passed down through generations, others don’t have that. Many people have disjointed families who, for one reason or the other, aren’t close. Sometimes this is because of a specific event, sometimes it’s not. Some people just aren’t close with their families.

A lot of people don’t like to discuss the fact that this time of year is difficult for those people because frankly, it’s depressing to think about the fact that some people are dreading the holidays that a lot of us look forward to. People that have big, happy families have a hard time fathoming the fact that some people don’t. Well, we at The Setonian are here to tell those people that there are all sorts of families.

Some people find the family they never had in their friends. Some people find it in their significant other’s family. Some people find it in their coworkers, and some people find it in one person. “Family,” can mean all kinds of things. Family can be the young gay couple whose parents don’t approve of their relationship. Family can be the group of friends in a book club together. Family can be the older man who lives across the country with his dog.

Try not to get bogged down by the traditional idea of a family, Pirates. Whether you’re planning on celebrating the holiday with your parents and your 743 cousins or whether you’re not seeing them for your own personal reasons, celebrate Thanksgiving with the people who care about, love and support you. The people we allow into our lives don’t have to be perfect, but they have to be good to us.

So, eat those carbs with the ones you love, Pirates. Whomever they be.
