Plagued by errors, Pirates drop both games in final day of Bearkat Classic

The Seton Hall Softball team (4-4 overall) ended its stay in Huntsville, Texas on Saturday with a pair of losses in what was the second day of the Bearkat Classic. The day began with a 4-3 loss to the Wichita State Shockers and finished with a loss to the No. 4 Washington Huskies by a score of 10-0. The Seton Hall defense was a major problem all weekend as the Pirates finished with 10 errors in the four games they played in the Bearkat Classic. The Pirates finished their weekend going 1-3 in the Classic. Alexis Walkden got the scoring started, slamming a two-run home run in the first inning that gave the Pirates the early advantage. The home run was her second of the young season. Shortstop Ragen Riddick added another run with an RBI-single in the next inning, but Riddick would be culpable for runs in the next inning that helped the Shockers take the lead later on. The Shockers got a run back in the bottom of the third on an RBI-double from Ryleigh Buck, and from there, two costly errors from Riddick helped the Shockers bring home three more runs in the bottom of the fifth. The runs scored in the third were enough to take the lead and hold on, as the Pirates could not bring home any runs after the second inning. Reagan Camp started the game for the Pirates and pitched well prior to the fifth inning. The three runs that scored in the fifth were all unearned for Camp, who pitched the entire game for Seton Hall. Camp allowed only one earned run in her six innings of work, with seven hits, one strikeout and one walk. The loss is her second of the season, as she now is 2-2 on the year. Game two only lasted five innings as No. 4 Washington dominated the Pirates throughout the game, winning 10-0 via the mercy rule. The Huskies are the highest ranked team head coach Paige Smith ever faced while coaching the Pirates. The Huskies scored in each of the four innings the offense went up to bat, starting with the first inning as Taryn Atlee brought home two on a RBI-single. Three more runs came in the next inning, first on a wild pitch and then on a Sis Bates two-run home run. An error from Riddick helped bring home another run in the next inning. Washington added four more runs in the fourth. Chrisa Head started the game for the Pirates but only lasted an inning after surrendering five runs on six hits and one walk, with all of the runs earned. Mo Sobel came in relief of Head and did not see much success either, as she also surrendered five runs; although, only three of them were earned. She pitched three innings in which she allowed five hits and struck out one. Head took the loss in the game and is now 0-2 on the season. The Pirates will be back in action next Friday, Feb. 23 in the UNCG Invitational with a doubleheader. Game one will be against the Appalachian State Mountaineers at 12 p.m., while game two will be against the UNC Greensboro Spartans at 2:30 p.m. Jose Feliciano can be reached at jose.feliciano@student.shu.edu or on Twitter @JFeliciano1101.
