Pirates blown away by Golden Eagles for their first Big East loss

Just a day after being voted the 13th-ranked team in the nation in the most recent AP Poll, Seton Hall came out flat in the second game of their road trip, as they fell to Marquette in the BMO Harris Bradley Center, 84-64. The Pirates kept it close early on, with four players getting on the board right away to give them a 9-6 lead at the first media timeout. Rowsey registered the first 11 points on the night for Marquette and would finish what was a blistering night for the redshirt senior with 31 points. The Pirates continued to struggle from there and did not find the net until after the under-12 media timeout. Marquette spread their lead to ten, and then further, as Seton Hall continued to fight and try to get the deficit back to single-digits. Despite the Pirates' efforts, several scoreless streaks in critical moments kept them behind, coupled with three-pointers that sent the home crowd into a frenzy. Despite shooting just over 48 percent in the first half, the Pirates were behind in the rebounding battle, had many costly turnovers, and as a result, were behind at the break, 42-32. At the start of the second half, it appeared the Pirates were ready to play, as they cut the lead to one point with improved play from Myles Powell and Angel Delgado. However, the Golden Eagles responded by taking flight over the Pirates with a 16-0 run over 3:20 of play. After coming so close to evening the game, Seton Hall was taken out of the game with one wave of momentum Ismael Sanogo tried to get the Pirates going offensively with a couple of uncharacteristic three-pointers and aggressive play under the net, however, his team-leading 14 points was nowhere near enough to catch up to the Golden Eagles. In the end, it was an 84-64 final score in which the Golden Eagles stunned the No. 13 Pirates and gave them their first Big East lost on the season. On the other side, Marquette improved to 12-5 and 3-2 in conference play. Seton Hall will look to rebound on Jan. 13 when they face off with Georgetown at the Prudential Center. Tip-off for that game is set for 12 p.m. Keith Egan can be reached at keith.egan@student.shu.edu or on Twitter @Keith_Egan10.
