What was set to be a three day Yale Intercollegiate was shortened to two thanks to the rain that fell down on Sunday at the Yale Golf Course in New Haven, Conn. The Pirates used a strong second round on Saturday by Sammie Staudt and company to creep up from ninth to sixth, ultimately finishing there after the tournament’s final day was called off.
Staudt started the tournament a little slow with a first round four-over-par, but came back in round two with a two-over-par which featured some of her best golf as she accumulated birdies on the 14th and 16th hole, on top of an eagle on the 17th to help her finish 14th on the final leaderboard. The six-over-par was her best tournament finish ever, albeit in a shortened weekend.
The Pirates finished with a cumulative score of 598 or 30-over-par. The first day saw the Pirates shoot a 302 or 18-over-par, good for ninth of the 15 competing schools. Day two was much better for the Hall, as they totaled a 296 or 12-over-par, good enough for fifth best on the day.
Stirling University ended up winning the Intercollegiate on the back of a dominant first round 285 in round one that put space between them and the other competing schools. And their second round only got better, as they shot a 280 in round two to finish with a 580, 12-over-par final score. Their two highest finishers on the weekend, Chloe Goadby and Hazel MacGarvie, were the top two players in the Intercollegiate overall. Goadby was, in fact, the only player to finish under par among the 90 competitors, finishing at two-under.
While the Pirates did not put up such numbers, there performances were still good enough to land two players on top of Staudt: Maddie Sager and Mia Kessler, in the top-20, in addition to Lizzie Win who rounded out the top 35. Sager used an efficient first round to help her finish with an eight-over-par, with Kessler finishing right alongside her at eight-over. Win, meanwhile, finished with a final tally of 10-over-par.
The next stop for Seton Hall women’s golf will be the Brown Bear Invitational in Seekonk, Mass., with the first round and second round scheduled for Sunday Oct. 15, and the third round set to follow the day after.
