The Seton Hall men’s basketball team was dealt its sixth loss on Saturday afternoon at Xavier, 84-76.
Despite the eight-point defeat, the Pirates hung in close most of the game. Xavier pulled away halfway through the second half and built up a 15-point lead. Although the Pirates cut the lead, the Musketeers never looked back on their way to a win.
The Pirates were paced by sophomore forward Desi Rodriguez, who finished with a career-high 21 points. Outside of his performance, the Pirates were relatively inefficient.
Star guard Isaiah Whitehead finished with 17 points, but shot just 6-of-20 from the field and a rough 2-of-10 from the three-point line. Fellow guard Khadeen Carrington finished with 19 points but went 7-of-17 from the floor. In total, the Pirates’ backcourt shot 15-of-45 from the field. They were also plagued by poor free-throw shooting. Seton Hall shot 10-19, worse than the team’s season average of 66 percent.
Xavier was led by sixth-man James Farr, who finished with a game-high 24 points. Farr dominated the boards as well with another game-high of 15 rebounds. Farr and fellow frontcourt mate Jalen Reynolds were able to hold Pirates forward Angel Delgado to seven points and seven rebounds.
Looking forward, the Pirates have to be breathing a sigh of relief. Saturday’s contest concluded a rough three-game stretch against nationally-ranked Big East teams Providence, Villanova and Xavier. SHU was only able to take the game at Providence, but showed it could play on the same court as Villanova and Xavier.
The Pirates come back home to the Prudential Center Wednesday, Jan. 27 for a game against Big East cellar-dweller St. John’s.
