Pretty S#arp: Seton Hall’s newest a cappella group
The addition of a new women’s singing group, “Pretty S#arp” brings a whole new meaning of girl power at Seton Hall University. The a cappella power ensemble is busy practicing and perfecting performances in order to bring more entertainment and fun to campus.
“For those who may not know, ‘#’ is the music symbol for sharp. We wanted a fun, witty, and relevant group name, so when Pretty S#arp was suggested by one of the group members, it just made sense and everyone loved it,” Marianna Triolo, president of Pretty S#arp said. The group was created in the spring 2015 semester and ever since, has brought harmonious happenings to campus.
According to Triolo, the group performs a wide variety of music, including songs by Beyoncé, Rihanna and Little Mix. “My favorite song is definitely ‘Wings’ by Little Mix. It is such a fun, empowering song. It has a great message and you can always feel the energy from everyone every time we sing it,” she added.
The group of women of Pretty S#arp fit together as harmoniously as the performances which they give.
“Our rendition of ‘Happy birthday’ is my favorite song to perform. Whenever we have a friend or a group member with a birthday, we’ll sing it for them or record a video. It’s a nice little surprise, and the group loves doing it for fun,” Briana McFee, vice president of Pretty S#arp said.
Triolo comes together with the group and exercises the healing powers of music. “I love being a part of such a diverse group of women who come from all different majors and backgrounds. It is nice because the music is what brought us together and since then we’ve developed a great group friendship,” Triolo said.
According to Triolo, students who want to try out need to come prepared with a short song such as a chorus or two.
“Having a group of girls with meshing attitudes and a love for singing has led to the creation of some phenomenal friendships within the group. We all blend in more ways than one which is super important for a performing group like us,” McFee said.
Their upcoming performance venues include the Westfield Public School system. Additionally, tryouts will be held at 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday and 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday in the Mooney choir room as they expect to bring in more members.
Videos and upcoming performances can all be located on their Facebook page “Pretty S#arp”.
