Women’s basketball improves to 6-1 with a road victory over Creighton

The Seton Hall women’s basketball team posted a 79-74 win over Big East-rival the Creighton Blue Jays Wednesday night in Omaha. With the win, the team now boasts a 6-1 overall record and sits at 1-0 in the Big East.

The Pirates have now won five games in a row for the first time since December of 2008.

Big East player of the week, Daisha Simmons scored over 20 points for a third straight game against Creighton. She ended the game with 23 points.

Alongside Daisha Simmons, three of the Pirates also scored double digits; Ka-Deidre Simmons put up 18 for the Pirates while tying her career high of three 3-pointers. Janee Johnson tied her career-high of 16 points. Entering the season, Johnson had only hit two 3-pointers in her career. But Wednesday night she had four, giving her a season total of 11 3-pointers this season and putting her in second place for 3-pointers on the team. Tabitha Richardson-Smith finished the game with 10 points.

Seton Hall took control early, leading by as many and 10 points in the first half. Creighton pulled within three before Johnson buried her second 3-pointer of the game moments before the buzzer went off. Her shot gave the Pirates a lead of 39-33 at the end of the half.

Creighton pulled within two points early on in the second half, but the Pirates responded with a 19.4 run over the next six and a half minutes, keeping the game out of reach.

Daisha Simmons took charge and converted a 3-point play in the 13th minute to give the Pirates a 10 point lead.

Seton Hall's lead remained in double digits until the final moments of the game when Creighton made one final push that ultimately came up short despite Seton Hall shooting just 2-for-9 from the free-throw line over the final minute of the game. The Blue Jays cut the Seton Hall lead down to four, 78-74, with seconds remaining, but Seton Hall ultimatley held Creighton to 0-for-4 shooting in the final minute of the game.

The Pirates will head to the Bronx on Friday, Dec. 5 to take on the defending Atlantic-10 champion Fordham Rams. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
