Why it will be another long season for Giants and Jets fans

Hey Giants and Jets fans, I know what you are all thinking—“The 2014 season can’t possibly be any worse than 2013 right?”

Maybe not so, that was pretty embarrassing, but I would not go booking your playoff tickets just yet. Let me explain.

Dear Giants fans,

Your 2014 campaign was plagued by injuries and absolute wretched quarterback play from Eli Manning. I almost felt bad for the guy, interception after interception.

Your defense was solid at times, but you lacked the bodies down the stretch to dig yourself out of that 0-6 hole.

You’ll be much better defensively this year and with the additions of Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Walter Thurmond III at cornerback, your now-formidable secondary has a chance to be perhaps the best in the NFC East.

But, the NFC East is the most offensive-heavy division in football and your offense is the worst of the group. Your 28th-ranked defense should be better this season with the addition of Rashard Jennings, but again, it can’t be much worse than last year.

I’ll peg the Giants at a ceiling of 8-8, with a basement of 6-10.

Dear Jets fans,

I’ll start out by saying your team is the closest thing in the AFC East to a second-best team. You have a solid defensive front seven, but in a passing league you simply lack the depth in the secondary to be competitive. You play arguably six of the top-ten quarterbacks in the league from Week Two through Week Seven. If the front seven can’t get to the quarterback the team is in serious trouble.

I think they will, and I like the offensive additions of Eric Decker and Chris Johnson. The offense still needs more work, but in year two of the Geno Smith era, I believe 2014 will be an improvement. I say 9-7 for the Jets.

The beauty about football is any team can, on any given Sunday, so until the games are played there really isn’t any telling how good teams will be. But neither of the New York teams have shown me anything this offseason to make me believe either one of them will be playoff-bound in 2014.
