Men’s Soccer Team Holds On To Tie in Their Season Opener
The men’s soccer team played to a 1-1 tie against University of Rhode Island in their season opener, Friday night.
Sophomore goalkeeper, Julian Spindler gave up the lone goal to URI in the 38th minute. The Pirates were outshot by the Rams in the first half, 8-5 with only three shots on goal. Spindler finished with four saves in the game.
The Pirates would answer with a goal of their own in the 77th minute with a strike from senior Kai Greene, who capitalized off a pass from fellow senior Victor Manosalvas.
The Pirates defense would bend but not break in the first overtime, giving up four shots to the Rams, none however, being on goal.
The Pirates would have a scoring chance in the second overtime when, with one second left in the game, senior Kevin Matthews sent a shot towards goal. The shot failed to meet the back of the Ram’s net and the game was over.
A couple of the first yellow-cards of the season were picked up by both teams—Seton Hall’s Alex Megna and Rhode Island’s Falko Friedrichs.
The Pirate’s will return to action in their home opener on Sunday, Aug. 31 against UMass-Lowell. First kick from Owen T. Carroll Field is slated for 1 p.m.
